October 2015 Book Haul

Books I purchased in October. (it's very embarrassing since I told myself at the beginning of the month I was on a book buying ban. However, Chapters has to go and have a bunch of crazy deals and I ended up buying way more books than I would have liked.)

I actually had to go back and check my Instagram to see which books I started to buy this month.

1. Life and Death - Stephenie Meyer
-how could I not buy this? Everyone's guilty pleasure that they will never admit to is Twilight. You know you enjoyed it a little bit or else you wouldn't have read all the books. See.

2. Possession - Elana Johnson
-it looks like a good read to me, I'm pretty interested in it for some weird reason.

3. The Martian - Andy Weir
-the movie for this book came out on the day before my birthday (I think) and I refuse to see the movie until I read the book first. I'm just weird like that.

4. Tape - Steven Camden
-I have never heard of this book before or seen it until they rearranged the Teen section at Chapters and I CANNOT wait to read this book. It sounds so good!

5. Once Every Never
and
6. Every Never After
by Lesley Livingston
- both looked good and they had both there so why not just get them at the same time?

7. Legacy of Kings - Eleanor Herman
-I actually go this as a birthday present from one of my best friends. So technically I didn't buy it. That's good, right?

8. Girl Online On Tour - Zoe Sugg (Zoella)
-Because I loved the first one so why not love the second one? (I loved the second one too.)

9. Me and Earl and The Dying Girl
-again, if I see a movie trailer that looks freaking awesome, I refuse to see the movie until I've read the book. Still gotta read the book, I know I'm a little behind.

10. Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban
also
11. the Goblet of Fire
you know these ones, everyone does.
-I hate to admit but I've never actually read these books. DO NOT say anything, I am collecting them so I CAN read them. They say that your first time reading them is a special thing so I'm waiting till the right time comes to read them. Also when I have all seven books.

12. The Raven Boys - Maggie Siefvater
-I've heard so many good things and I really want to read this series.

13. Eve & Adam - Michael Grant
-this one is really different and sounds super interesting. Plus I've never heard of it before so it caught my interest even more.

14. Just Ella - Margaret Peterson Haddix
-a re-telling of Cinderella and it looks pretty and is super short. All things I love.

15. Red Queen - Victoria Aveyard
-I have been wanting this one pretty much since it came out and I finally got it! Everyone always says such good things about it too!

16. The Winner's Curse - Marie Rutkoski
-this one has always caught my attention for some reason, so excited to dive into it soon! (hopefully)

17. Everything, Everything - Nicola Yoon
-this book sounds so good to me for some reason. I'm trying to read more contemporary (as you may be able to tell already) and this one sounds like it's just what I'm looking for.

18. I Hunt Killers - Barry Lyga
-someone suggested this to me like three months ago on Instagram though I never actually saw it in the store until just recently and I didn't hesitate to buy it.

19. Anna and the French Kiss - Stephanie Perkins
-I actually bought this one back in September for my friend for her birthday, and I wanted a copy for myself. I wanted to read it so badly that I almost read her copy before giving it to her but I held back! And now I'm good because I have my own!

20. The Darkest Minds - Alexandra Braken
-this sounds right up my alley. The Chapters girl ringing me in read the back while I was paying and wrote it down for herself because she thought it sounded amazing!

21. Masque of the Red Death - Bethany Griffin
-I can't remember exactly why I bought this one but it's been on my to-buy list all summer so I finally caved.

22. The Demon King - Cinda Williams Chima
-I spotted this one a while ago and finally caved to get it. The Chapters girl told me she loved it. (Different girl than the other one on number 20.)

23. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets to the Universe - Benjamin Alire Saenz
-been on my to-buy list forever, it was time.

24. An Abundance of Katherines - John Green
-I've got to get my fill of John Green.

25. Famous Last Words - Katie Alender
-I freaking love Katie Alender. More than John Green. Shh don't tell him.

26. The Calling
and
27. The Rising
by Kelley Armstrong
-I started The Gathering and at chapter 2 decided I needed the next two books in the series. Kelley Armstrong was one of my first favorite authors. I love her Darkest Powers trilogy to the moon and back.

28. Mosquitoland - David Arnold
-because who doesn't want to spend their summer on a road trip. Just this way it costs me $20 instead of... well a lot more than $20. Who knows, maybe this book will inspire me to travel the country anyways.

29. Saint Anything - Sarah Dessen
-I wasn't originally going to get this book, but I've heard a lot of good things about it. Then I re-read the summary and now I have a theory and I want to prove it's right.

30. The Accident Season - Moira Fowley-Doyle
-I'm really interested in this book because it's different. I've never heard of something like this before and I'm very excited to see where it goes.

That's it, I purchased exactly 30 books this month and that's a lot. But my book-buying need/want has decreased dramatically. I don't want to 'just stop in and look' at chapters that much anymore. I just want to sit and read and admire the books I own right now. And that's fantasic.

8. Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell wasn't hard to fall in love with.

I fell hard and fast in love with this book and its characters.

I don't read a lot of contemporary books, so this one really in all honesty didn't seem like a book I was going to purchase and read. So while I was looking after my aunt's house one weekend I asked my cousin if I could give it a read, since she owned a copy. (Same weekend I read 'The Selection' in case you were wondering.)

I had heard a lot of good things about it and was a little skeptical but I went in open minded.

Around the fourth chapter I decided I was hooked.

Around the seventh chapter I decided I was going to buy a copy for myself.

Around the 12th chapter my aunt and her family came home and then I went home.

So I bought a copy and finished it rather quickly considering its size. It actually helped calm me down before my very first job interview ever and I pretty much fell in love with all of the characters.

There's a spin off called 'Carry On' coming out at some point about the characters and story that the main character Cath fangirled over, however I'm a little weary about it because It doesn't sound like something I might read (so far, I haven't got all the details yet).

But you never know! I might fall in love with it just like I fell in love with this one. But for now I just want to read the rest of what Rainbow Rowell has to offer. I have her book Eleanor & Park that I plan on reading hopefully soon but my TBR pile is embarrassingly large.

I have probably three times the amount of books to read than I have actually read.

Yea, its bad, but I'm working my way up!

Fangirl kind of made me want to go back to college for some reason but I don't think I could do it just yet. If you want a great transitional from high school to college book, then you'll love this one.

I rated it 4 stars on goodreads though it's more like a 4.25 stars in all honesty.

(This is the only picture I have of my copy, sorry!)

7. Unholy Night - Seth Grahame-Smith

Unholy Night by Seth Grahame-Smith is an adventure I never thought I needed until I read it.

This book centers around a man named Balthazar who happens to be a thief and a killer and also one of the three wise men who visited Jesus the night of his birth.

Yep, that is pretty much what happens in this book. There's an evil king and a bunch of fighting and Jesus. what more could you ask for?

I originally rated this at 4 stars but changed it a couple days later to 5 stars and added it to my favourites list.

There were some parts when I almost stopped reading for a minute because it was so descriptive with its gore scenes but I kept on reading and was so glad that I did. I've never been much of a person for historical fiction but this book was so amazing that I just want more.

As long as you can deal with very descriptive scenes like slow torture as one of the examples, then you should read this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone really.

My book hangover for this one lasted pretty long, about three weeks. Mostly mine only last about a week so that's pretty long for me.

I just loved everything about it. the setting, the time period, the characters. Even if they were pretty famous. And the ending about what happened to the other two wise men made me weirdly happy. But I won't tell you what it was because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

6. The Assassin's Curse - Cassandra Rose Clarke

The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke is by far one of my all time favourite books.

This book takes place in an alternate universe and I was a bit cautious of it at first but I had both books in the duology so I figured I better try it out.

I loved every second of it. You may think that the beginning of it is a bit cliche but I promise you it's anything but that. It's an adventure of magic and pirates and amazingness all the way through. I finished it within a day and had THE biggest book hangover of my life.

I also started the second and finished it in the same day as well. Way back up in June and my book hangover lasted through three months and ten books (so far, its still a little bit there if I think about it a little or see it on my shelf).

So yea, it was fantastic.

I wish I could have given it ten stars, but it's sitting at a 5 on my goodreads. Because that's all they will allow me to have.

This book was easily added to my favourites list after I was finished with it.

I really do wish there could be another book in the series or just more pages from where it ended but sadly there isn't. Its okay though! Always leave them wanting more!

There are so many good things that I could say about this book but I won't because I want everyone to find out for themselves. I think everyone needs to read this book. There isn't hardly any romance which is always a bit odd to read but you know it's going to show up.

I won't spoil anything for you, but having a girl pirate whose only dream is to own her own pirate ship plus an assassin who is self conscious about his looks travelling around together to break an impossible cure is all you really need in your life.

That's all I'm going to say about it, but you should all really go and read it! (Also, the cover is just as pretty in person.)

5. The Selection - Kiera Cass

The Selection by Kiera Cass is the beginning of a book series that I will not be finishing, probably ever.

There is so much that I just don't understand about this book.

Why is in the teen section of the book store? Why do so many people seem to like it so much? How was this even published? Why is the cover so pretty?

Because honestly this book does not deserve such a beautiful front cover.

I never wanted to really pick up this book in the first place. I'd read the summary for it on various occasions but each time I re-read the back of that book it seemed like a book idea I would never care for.

So while watching my aunt's house for a weekend I asked my cousin if I could give it a read to see what all the hype was about.

I finished it in about five hours total, but I had a lot of breaks due to its pure annoyance to me. So in reality it took me about a day and a half. But I finished it.

So let me rant for a little bit.

This author had a great idea with good intentions and I could see that so clearly.

But...

It wasn't written very well. Seriously, why is this under the teen section? It should be in the 9-12 area of the store. Because that is who this writing style is really for.

There was very little explanation to what was happening and things were really too fast-paced for me. Seriously, the main girl (can't remember her name because I could care less) just pulled things out of her ass that weren't there before.

One minute she's all lovey-dovey with the prince and wanting to kiss him so badly but the next she's making out in secret with her x-boyfriend.

My heart actually hurts over how terrible this really was.

But I wanted it to be good for some reason and it just wasn't. It was so bad that I can't even begin to describe how much I want people to stop blowing this up and making it sound good because it was awful.

I gave it 2 stars, but really more like a 1.5. Because when I give 1 star it means I didn't finish reading it. But I finished this one so I gave it a slightly higher rating.

I really wish I didn't even read it in the first place. It was so painful.

Sorry to anyone who liked it but I just absolutely hated it.

I don't have a picture because I refuse to purchase it or even take a photo of it.
